2006-2007 Year Accomplishments and Milestones

  • 5 New Canyon and Creek Friends Groups were established, bringing our overall total to 41 Friends Groups!
  • Over 4,000 hours of volunteer service were generated for San Diego’s Creeks and Canyons. 500 new volunteers were enrolled.
  • An estimated 650 San Diego youths were involved in our educational and stewardship programs.
  • The Campaign increased to three full time staff to continue our work in San Diego’s Open Spaces.
  • The Campaign launches a new quarterly newsletter “Canyons Campaign Currents” as well as a new website and logo.
  • The High School Community Service Program was created to allow students to earn required credits by helping with projects in their neighborhood canyons.
  • The Campaign partnered with the San Diego Audubon and Harmonium After-School Program to launch the innovative “Harmonium in Nature” program.
  • Governor Schwartznaeger signs bill written by Senator Christine Kehoe dedicating 7,000 acres of city-owned land ( most of which is Canyonlands), in law saving the city $1 million in “dedication” costs. Senator Kehoe said “Protecting our urban canyons has been a priority of local residents, community groups, and environmental organizations throughout the city. This law enables residents and the city to realize their longstanding goal of protecting these areas.”
