San Diego Canyons Campaign - Sierra Club

The Canyons Campaign is dedicated to educating San Diego’s youth about the value of open space, community stewardship and volunteerism as well as developing a ’sense of place’ in the nature of San Diego. In his book, Last Child in the Woods, Saving our Children from Nature Deficit Disorder (2005), author and San Diego Union Tribune columnist Richard Louv pulled together a host of studies and information that show how our children learn better in natural, outdoor settings and how nature can help ward off Attention Deficit Disorders and childhood depression.

High School Community Service
We welcome the participation of high school students and can provide students with documentation of hours volunteered. Helping to cleanup and restore canyons and creeks provides students with an educational, healthy way to fulfill community service credits that truly benefits San Diego residents. Kids in Canyons
Kids in Canyons is a coordinated effort between Aquatic Adventures and the Sierra Club San Diego Canyons Campaign. This program provides nature-classroom programs in creeks and canyons for students in San Diego public schools. Since 2005 over 720 students have participated in this program by visiting and helping to restore their neighborhood creek or canyon.

Harmonium in Nature

Harmonium in Nature is an innovative education collaboration between San Diego Audubon Society, Harmonium 6-6 Program, San Diego Museum of Natural History and the Sierra Club San Diego Canyons Campaign. The program provides outdoor nature-classroom programs for Harmonium after-school participants. This program connects students to the natural world by introducing them to spaces in their communities, and to develop an ethic of stewardship of their neighborhood’s natural environment and cultivate a ’sense of place’ that inspires their imagination.

Outdoor Outreach
The Campaign works at Chollas Creek locations with Outdoor Outreach, a non-profit committed to providing an opportunity for at-risk and underprivileged you to gain confidence and self esteem through participation in outdoor activities. Students learn about their local creeks and canyons while conducting service projects such as erosion control and trash removal.
